Maurice Kottelat (lahir 16 Juli 1957[1]), adalah seorang iktiologis Swiss yang memiliki spesialiasi dalam bidang perikanan air tawar.

Kottelat mendapatkan lisensi di bidang ilmu pengetahuan dari Universitas Neuchâtel pada tahun 1987,[2] dan meraih gelar doktor dari Universitas Amsterdam pada tahun 1989. Pada tahun 1980 dia pergi ke Thailand dan memulai penelitian lapangan di Asia Tenggara dan perikanan air tawar Indonesia.[2] Pada tahun 1997, dia menulis revisi yang penting terhadap genus Coregonus, dengan memasukkan spesies ikan yang berasal dari Danau Jenewa, Danau Constance dan danau-danau lain di Swiss.[3] Bersama dengan Dr. Tan Heok Hui, dia bekerja di Sumatra, tempat di mana mereka menemukan Paedocypris progenetica, yang disebut sebagai ikan terkecil di dunia.[4] Pada tahun 2007, dia memublikasikan Handbook of European Freshwater Fishes bersama dengan Jörg Freyhof. Kottelat telah mengidentifikasi lebih dari 440 spesies ikan baru ke dalam ilmu pengetahuan.[5]

Pada tahun 2006, dia dianugerahi gelar Doktor Honoris Causa dari Universitas Neuchâtel.[6] Kottelat adalah mantan (1997-2007) dan presiden (2012-sekarang) dari Masyarakat Iktiologi Eropa.[7] Dia adalah salah satu komisioner dari Komisi Internasional untuk Nomenklatur Zoologi. Untuk sebagian besar dari kariernya, dia tidak memegang posisi akademik apapun tetapi bekerja sebagai seorang "ahli takson sampingan".[7]
